Spider veins are small red, purple, or blue veins that often appear on the surface of the thighs, calves, and ankles. They commonly resemble threads or webs. Spider veins don't have valves, but enlarge due to increased pressure. There can be several feeding sources for spider veins. Because there are several possible causes, the treatment of spider veins can be challenging. Often, treatment requires expertise from a therapist and cooperation from the patient.
Spider veins do not lead to varicose veins, or have harmful medical consequences.
