Varicose veins are bulging veins, typically 4 millimeters (mm) or more in diameter. Severe varicose veins can compromise the nutrition of the skin and lead to eczema, inflammation or even ulceration of the lower leg. In addition to discomfort, varicose veins increase the risk of developing phlebitis.
Symptoms caused by varicose veins may include sharp pain, aching, heaviness, itching, restless legs, congestion, pressure, throbbing, tiredness, and night cramps. In addition, an advanced sign is swelling in the ankle area.
Over time discoloration, called stasis dermatitis, may develop in the ankle and lower leg areas, and later lead to ulceration.
